Chronic Disease Programs Get a Funding Boost
NCOA is applauding the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services for releasing $373 million in American Recovery & Reinvestment Act funds for community-based chronic disease prevention and wellness initiatives.
Americans Speak Out About Chronic Conditions
A new survey conducted by the National Council on Aging shows the challenges of the US health care system for Americans living with chronic conditions. The survey examines the attitudes of Americans with chronic conditions and explores their quality of life, health needs and experiences with the health care system, barriers to self-care, and what is needed to better manage overall health. Practice Change Fellows Program: Call for Applications
The Practice Change Fellows program is pleased to announce that, with the generosity of the Atlantic Philanthropies, the program has been funded for a fourth cohort of Fellows, and the 2010 award cycle is now open. This program is a two year opportunity for nurses, physicians and social workers to develop leadership skills and content expertise in order to positively influence care for older adults. Apllications and more details are available at www.practicechangefellows.org. The application deadline for the 2010 award cycle is April 7, 2010.
NCOA's Healthy Aging Briefings
NCOA offers monthly webinars and other presentations on a variety of healthy aging topics, including: caregiving, evidence-based programming, fall prevention, mental health, physical activity, and more. These webinars combine a teleconference with an interactive Web presentation.
Become a Master Trainer in the Matter of Balance Program
MaineHealth's Partnership for Healthy Aging is offering three Master Trainings in February, April and May 2010 for their Matter of Balance program in Arizona, Michigan and Maine, respectively. A Matter of Balance is specifically designed to reduce fear of falling, stop the fear of falling cycle, and improve activity levels among community-dwelling older adults. The program includes eight two-hour classes presented by trained coaches using an extensively detailed training manual and two instructional videos.

NCOA's Whitelaw Receives Elizabeth Fries Health Education Award
Nancy A. Whitelaw, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Director of Center for Healthy Aging at the National Council on Aging (NCOA), has been awarded the 2009 Elizabeth Fries Health Education Award. The Elizabeth Fries Health Education Award is presented to honor a health educator who has made a substantial contribution to advancing the field of health education or health promotion through research, program development, or program delivery. Dr. Whitelaw received the award for leading an innovative, effective, nationwide movement to deliver evidence-based health enhancement programs through networks of community-based, aging, and health care organizations.
